the square laid out part of development of new westend district between 1904 , 1908 , named reichskanzlerplatz after office of imperial chancellor. when eponymous u-bahn station inaugurated emperor wilhelm ii on 29 march 1908, square still without houses.
after nazi seizure of power, square renamed adolf-hitler-platz on 21 april 1933. according welthauptstadt germania plans hitler , architect albert speer, have important role @ western end of monumental east-west axis, including vast heroes memorial. planned rename square after benito mussolini. after world war ii, name officially returned reichskanzlerplatz on 31 july 1947. 6 days after death of president theodor heuss on 18 december 1963, square given present name.
in 2014, google apologized after labeling theodor-heuss-platz adolf-hitler-platz on google maps service.
