hardware
hector s hardware configuration has been progressively upgraded since system first commissioned.
phase 1
hector s initial configuration, known phase 1, featured 60 cray xt4 cabinets containing 1416 compute blades, giving total of 11,328 2.8 ghz amd opteron processor cores, connected 576 terabytes of raid backing storage, later increased 934 tb. peak performance of system 59 teraflops.
in august 2008, 28 cray x2 black widow vector compute nodes added system. each node had 4 vector processors, giving total of 112 processors. each processor capable of 25.6 gigaflops, giving peak performance of 2.87 teraflops. each 4-processor node shared 32 gigabytes of memory.
phase 2a
in summer of 2009, xt4 cabinets upgraded quad-core 2.3 ghz opteron processors 8 gb memory each. doubled number of processor cores 22,656, , increased total system memory 45.3 terabytes. peak performance increased 208 teraflops.
phase 2b
the phase 2b upgrade, performed in 2010, involved installation of new 20-cabinet cray xt6 system featuring 12-core opteron 6100 processors, giving total of 44,544 cores , peak performance of on 360 teraflops. @ same time existing xt4 system reduced approximately half original size. further upgrade took place later in 2010 replace seastar2 interconnect new interconnect technology, codenamed gemini.
phase 3
the phase 3 upgrade took place in november , december 2011. involved extending xt6 system 30 cabinets containing 704 compute blades, , upgrading processors 16-core, 2.3 ghz interlagos opterons, giving total of 90,112 cores. operating system upgraded cle 4.0.
