taroom division created on 11 november 1879 1 of 74 divisions around queensland under divisional boards act 1879 population of 1015.

with passage of local authorities act 1902, taroom division became shire of taroom on 31 march 1903.

the taroom town hall built in 2004, next door shire council chambers. intended serve civic , recreational centre town , has main auditorium seats 300 people, commercial kitchen, , bar. hall awarded regional commendation royal australian institute of architects in 2004.

on 15 march 2008, under local government (reform implementation) act 2007 passed parliament of queensland on 10 august 2007, shire of taroom dissolved. division 1 of shire, centred on town of taroom, merged shire of banana. remainder of shire of taroom, centred on town of wandoan merged town of dalby , shires of chinchilla, murilla, tara , wambo create new dalby region, renamed western downs region on 29 june 2009. in doing so, taroom became 1 of 3 former shires in queensland not stay intact, alongside shires of tiaro , beaudesert.
