ancient , medieval tiberias destroyed series of devastating earthquakes, , of built after major earthquake of 1837 destroyed or badly damaged in great flood of 1934. houses in newer parts of town, uphill waterfront, survived. in 1949, 606 houses, comprising of built-up area of old quarter other religious buildings, demolished on objections of local jews owned half houses. wide-scale development began after six-day war, construction of waterfront promenade, open parkland, shopping streets, restaurants , modern hotels. preserved several churches, including 1 foundations dating crusader period, city s 2 ottoman-era mosques, , several ancient synagogues. city s old masonry buildings constructed of local black basalt white limestone windows , trim have been designated historic landmarks. preserved parts of ancient wall, ottoman-era citadel, historic hotels, christian pilgrim hostels, convents , schools.


archaeology

a 2,000 year-old roman theatre discovered 15 metres (49 feet) under layers of debris , refuse @ foot of mount bernike south of modern tiberias. once seated on 7,000 people.


in 2004, excavations in tiberias conducted israel antiquities authority uncovered structure dating 3rd century ce may have been seat of sanhedrin. @ time called beit hava ad.
