furukawa arrived @ johnson space center in june 2004. in february 2006 completed nasa astronaut candidate training included scientific , technical briefings, intensive instruction in shuttle , international space station systems, physiological training, t-38 flight training, , water , wilderness survival training. completion of initial training qualified him various technical assignments within nasa astronaut office , flight assignment mission specialist on space shuttle mission.
in august 2007, furukawa served aquanaut during neemo 13 project, exploration research mission held in aquarius, world s undersea research laboratory.
