jean received bachelor of arts degree in italian , hispanic languages , literature university of montreal, and, 1984 1986, taught italian studies there, while completing master of arts degree in comparative literature. went on language , literature studies @ university of florence, university of perugia, , catholic university of milan. besides french , english, jean fluent in spanish, italian, , haitian creole, , can read portuguese.


concurrent studies between 1979 , 1987, jean coordinated study on spousal abuse , worked @ women s shelter, paved way establishment of network of shelters women , children across canada. involved herself in organizations dedicated assisting immigrants canada obtain entry desired, , later worked employment , immigration canada , @ conseil des communautés culturelles du québec, jean began writing experiences of immigrant women. married french-born, canadian filmmaker jean-daniel lafond, , couple adopted daughter marie-Éden, orphaned child jacmel.
