in 16th century portuguese made commercial contacts town , established commercial centre in 1554 ce. portuguese conducted missionary enterprise here. in 1658, dutch made agreement king vijaya nayakkar of thanjavur on 5 january 1662, ten villages transferred portuguese dutch — nagapattinam port, puthur, muttam, poruvalancheri, anthanappettai, karureppankadu, azhingimangalam, sangamangalam, thiruthinamangalam, manjakollai, nariyankudi. ten christian churches , hospital built dutch. released pagoda coins name nagapattinam engraved in tamil. per agreement between first maratta king egoji of thanjavur , dutch, naagapattinam , surrounding villages handed on dutch on 30 december 1676. in 1690, capital of dutch coromandel changed pulicat nagapattinam.


this town fell hands of british in 1781 after 2 naval battles between british , french fleets fought off coast of negapatam, known: first in 1758 part of 7 years war , second in 1782 part of fourth anglo-dutch war. town taken british dutch in 1781 (who had been formally brought war in 1780). when dutch , british reached peace agreement in 1784, nagapattinam formally ceded british. 277 villages, nagore headquarters, handed on east india company.


from 1799 1845 ce nagapttinam headquarters of tanjore district. nagapattinam , nagore incorporated single municipality in 1866 ce. town remained 1 of chief ports madras presidency. port suffered decline after inclusion of tranquebar , tuticorin ports. after india s independence, sirkazhi continued part of thanjavur district until 1991, , later became part of newly created nagapattinam district. nagapattinam severely affected tsunami followed 2004 indian ocean earthquake. developed in year 2016 there many big textiles showroom (krishna, murasons etc.), confectionery houses(mehala traders, uma etc.), schools, colleges , variety of fishes available in here.
