in 2002, barletta ran republican candidate in 11th district against nine-term democratic incumbent paul kanjorski. 11th had long been considered democratic district in pennsylvania outside of philadelphia , pittsburgh. however, barletta viewed strong candidate—indeed, first credible republican challenger kanjorski had faced since 1986 reelection bid—since popular republican mayor heavily democratic city. barletta lost, taking 42.4% of vote. race might have been closer had state legislature not decided move heavily democratic scranton, heart of 10th district, 11th. barletta lost district s share of lackawanna county, home scranton, 32 points; trailed in old 11th 9,000 votes.

2008
