essentiality

ata advocates essentiality of trucking industry in u.s. economy. trucks haul 100 percent of consumer goods , more 70 percent of freight tonnage in united states. moreover, economists estimate 80 percent of u.s. communities receive goods exclusively truck.

economists expect u.s. population grow 27 million in next 10 years, , overall freight tonnage increase 26 percent 2021, modal share hauled truck increasing 71 percent. keep pace growth, ata advocates increasing capacity , improving highway infrastructure @ nation s worst traffic congestion points ensure efficient movement of goods.

safety

ata s safety message focuses on 3 different key areas: improving driver performance, safer vehicles, , safer motor carriers. ata maintains trucking industry safer has ever been, according truck vehicle miles traveled (vmt) figures federal highway administration (fhwa), , national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) data on crashes. since new hours-of-service regulations took effect in 2004, truck-involved fatality rate has come down more 20 percent , @ lowest since u.s. department of transportation began keeping records in 1975. fatality rate has declined more 66 percent since 1975. trucking industry has seen increase in safety belt usage.

in 2008, ata released progressive 18-point safety agenda further improve highway safety. ata recommends following in order increase safety through improving driver performance: uniform commercial drivers license (cdl) testing standards, additional parking facilities trucks, national maximum speed limit of 65 mph, strategies increase use of safety belts, increased use of red light cameras, , more stringent laws reduce drinking , driving. in order make vehicles safer ata supports: targeted electronic speed governing of non-commercial vehicles, electronic speed governing of large trucks, , new large truck crashworthiness standards. finally, ata promotes making motor carriers safer through: national employer notification system, national clearinghouse positive drug , alcohol test results of cdl holders, , required safety training new entrant motor carriers.

sustainability

ata supports environmental sustainability policies provide trucking industry realistic ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions without impeding freedom of movement essential u.s. economy. ata has 6 recommendations reduce carbon emissions in trucking industry: enacting national 65 mph speed limit , governing truck speeds 65 mph or lower, decreasing idling, increasing fuel efficiency, reducing congestion through highway improvements, promoting use of more productive truck combinations, , through supporting national fuel economy standards medium- , heavy-duty trucks. these proposals can reduce diesel , gasoline fuel consumption 86 billion gallons (330,000,000 m) , co2 emissions of vehicles billion tons on next decade.

also, ata recommends shippers , carriers join environmental protection agency s (epa) smartway transport partnership program. in 2009 ata awarded smartway excellence award. 2012, smartway transport partnership cut carbon dioxide (co2) emissions 33 66 million metric tons per year.

strategic plan

the ata has instituted 5 step plan meet above goals:

encouraging trucking industry prioritize safety
continually increasing efficiency , productivity
branding ata authoritative voice industry
providing solid leadership in industry
