the settlement pattern of vale of pickering striking. there 2 types of settlement, both relating topography. first group villages , towns on northern , southern fringes of area. these settlements established in close proximity each other on approximate shoreline of glacial lake. built along spring line, underlying aquifers met less porous rocks. many of parishes associated settlements linear running vale bottom upwards higher ground, meaning long narrow parishes each had amount of different types of soil , elevation. second type of settlement on valley floor. these small more spaced villages in areas of rising ground. these villages result relatively late enclosure of carr lands following drainage @ beginning of 19th century. long narrow lanes , tracks wide grass verges link these settlements , solid managed hedges.
building materials vary soft limestones , sandstones harder gritstones. steep slopes of roofs suggests older buildings had thatch coverings these have been replaced red pantiles.
