designed , sculpted jack du rose , manufactured piccadilly jewellers bentley & skinner, 8,601 flawless pavé-laid diamonds, weighing in total 1,106.18 carats (221.236 g), on platinum cast, cover entirety of skull. @ centre of forehead lies pear-shaped pink diamond, centrepiece of work. diamonds used work said ethically sourced.


hirst stated idea work came aztec turquoise skull @ british museum. however, artist john lekay, friend of hirst s in 1990s, said work based on skull covered crystals lekay had made in 1993. lekay said, when heard doing it, felt being punched in gut. when saw image online, felt part of me in piece. bit shocked.
