Madras Army 1st Punjab Regiment

after conquest of sindh , punjab in 1840s, british focus shifted towards northwest , madras army largely reduced garrison duties. affected morale , efficiency. turn of century, reputation of madrassi units had suffered considerably , either disbanded or reconstituted northerners. among latter 5 battalions, go on form 1st punjab regiment in 1922. in 1902, south indians mustered out , replaced punjabi muslims, sikhs , rajputs in 1st, 2nd , 10th battalions. next year, 3rd , 5th battalions reconstituted punjabi muslims, sikhs , hindu jats. under kitchener reforms of 1903, these battalions redesignated 62nd, 66th, 76th, 82nd , 84th punjabis; severing hundred , fifty years of association madras. meanwhile, 1st bengal infantry redesignated 1st brahmans.
