1957–1991
on december 19, 1957, in accordance decree of council of ministers of soviet union, construction of kurumoch airport commenced. construction overseen , managed n.p. skrinsky, chairman of kuybyshev airport january 7, 1958, december 14, 1959. airport @ first named kurumoch airport, later renamed kuybyshev airport because samara s official name 1935 1991 kuybyshev. airport did not have domestic or international passenger status, because initial purpose of airport military practices , cargo imports/exports.

on july 30, 1960, kuybyshev airport became operational military purposes. on same day, first avionic practice held 13 ilyushin il-18s , 7 antonov an-10s. kuybyshev airport used transit aerodrome short-range aircraft in need of refuelling.
on february 27, 1961, first commercial flight kuybyshev airport sheremetyevo international airport, moscow, piloted v. a. mikhailov. on may 15, 1961, kuybyshev gained domestic passenger status , had first daily flight mineralnye vody. same year, kuybyshev airport granted flights leningrad (st. petersburg), tashkent, adler, etc.
construction continued between 1965 , 1970, new maintenance hangar, baggage claim facility, 5-story hotel, second runway, , new oil storage bunkers added airport s infrastructure. in 1970, approximately 700,000 passengers , 27,000 tonnes of cargo passed through kuybyshev airport. 1971, facilities , expansions completed. in 1972, construction on training center flight engineers completed. same year, after endurance tests completed, second runway exploited commercial use.
between 1981 , 1990, kuybyshev airport underwent 2 indoor reconstructions. second one, in 1989, purpose of creating 2 different lounge areas. after fall of soviet union, 2 areas became airport s domestic departure zone. new flight catering facility constructed. facility demanded large quantity of electricity freezers , conveyor belts, stronger transmission tower cable system run airport. improved living conditions of village of kurumoch nearby, cable ran through. in 1990, kuybyshev airport reached passenger traffic peak of 3,700,000.
1991–2011
preceding dissolution of soviet union, city of kuybyshev renamed samara. in 1992, after meeting icao requirements, kurumoch airport granted international status. in 1993, construction of new international terminal completed. still used day main , terminal.
on february 19, 1993, airport created open joint-stock company (ojsc) samara airlines. samara airlines made benefit , prosperity of kuybyshev international airport. on 9 december 1994, airport made ojsc international airport samara .
on may 31, 2002, kuybyshev international airport renamed kurumoch international airport. previous name dismissed because of ties soviet union (the city , airport named after valerian kuybyshev: pro-soviet revolutionary). renamed kurumoch after small village near airport, , due fact airport s original name kurumoch airport.
during 2007, rosaviatsia in cooperation russia s ministry of transport, systematic plan created in order boost regional , general aviation in russia between 2008 , 2020. included optimization of russian air companies (aeroflot, s7, etc.) , airports, creation of transit traffic , hub airports. kurumoch prospectively regarded best hub airport volga federal district.
2011–present
in 2011, demanded president of russia dmitry medvedev, ojsc international airport samara auction 50.99% of shares capitalist investors. same year airports of regions, largest airport holding company in russia (and held renova group), won bid on investment towards kurumoch international airport.
on january 17, 2012, koltsovo invest , jsc development corporation samara region signed contract officially realizing kurumoch development project.the contract stated in phase of construction, airports of regions build new terminal no less 35,000 m² in size, , facility exploited no later 31 december 2014. contract noted airport have passenger traffic handling rate of 3,500,000 passengers annually, , cost approximately 12,300,000,000 rubles (via 2011 currency rate), 4,331,000,000 of invested private owners/companies. of contract clauses regarding phase of development project met.
phase ii set between 2015 , 2018, , aimed @ increasing area of existing terminal (an additional 25,000 m², creating facility 60,000 m² total surface), construction of new 4-star hotel, business center, multi-storey parking area, , aeroexpress/train station. after phase ii, airport should able handle 4,000,000 passengers annually.
