as part of united kingdom, vale of pickering has cool summers , relatively mild winters. weather conditions vary day day season season. latitude of area means influenced predominantly westerly winds depressions , associated fronts, bringing them unsettled , windy weather, particularly in winter. between depressions there small mobile anticyclones bring periods of fair weather. in winter anticyclones bring cold dry weather. in summer anticyclones tend bring dry settled conditions can lead drought. latitude area mild in winter , cooler in summer due influence of gulf stream in northern atlantic ocean. air temperature varies on daily , seasonal basis. temperature lower @ night , january coldest time of year average maximum of 5.8 degrees celsius. july warmest month average maximum of 19.4 degrees celsius. average annual rainfall 755.0 mm (29.72 in) rain falling on 129 days.
geology
the site of post glacial lake pickering, vale has predominantly level topography covered glacial drift deposits, rolling low ground on boulder clay , moraines in far east. underlying jurassic sandstones , mudstones have little direct influence upon landscape. there minor outliers of jurassic limestone in places @ foot of howardian hills , north york moors, , there eroded chalk wolds mixed sands @ base of wolds in southeast. there springs associated calcareous aquifers in places on periphery of vale.

the vale of pickering drainage basin surrounding hills. @ eastern end of area canalised , straightened river hertford drains west derwent, rises on north york moors few miles scarborough before draining southwards vale. @ western part of area river rye , numerous tributaries flow eastwards , join derwent north of malton. derwent flows southwards through malton , kirkham gorge join river ouse @ barmby on marsh. many of watercourses in vale maintained 3 vale of pickering internal drainage boards rye idb, thornton idb , muston & yedingham idb.
