the acha includes both men s , women s divisions. men s side made of 3 divisions: 1, 2, , 3. division 3 last established in 1999. each division has own distinguishing set of guidelines explained below. women s side has 2 divisions. division 1 began in 2000 , division 2 recent addition acha inception in 2006.

despite teams non-varsity status, caliber of acha play can quite high, in division 1. many large universities not sponsor hockey @ ncaa varsity level have become powerhouses, such ohio university, indiana university, , illinois. additionally, several universities sponsor ncaa varsity hockey teams field acha-affiliated teams. of non-varsity sports activities, acha-affiliated hockey teams garner attention @ universities, such missouri state third largest spectator sport. same can said arizona , university of georgia draws third largest fan base behind football , basketball.

men s divisions

acha men s division 1 comprises 57 teams. many of these teams compete against ncaa hockey d1 , d3 schools throughout regular season. there 7 conferences along independent teams compete annually murdoch cup, awarded men s acha division 1 national champion. twenty teams compete in national tournament. these top-twenty teams ranked/selected way of computer rankings, , determined auto-berths 7 regular-season conference champions. @ nationals, teams ranked 1–12 receive first-round byes, teams ranked 13–20 matching 20 vs 13 (etc.), rights play in second-round in pre-determined bracket slots.

acha men s division 2 largest division in acha, includes approximately 200 teams in 12 conferences , independents. these teams divided 4 regions (central, northeast, southeast , west). total of 16 teams qualify national tournament, 4 each region. each month of season ranking of top 15 teams in region released. after final ranking in february top 2 seeds each region earn automatic berth nationals. seeds 3–10 compete in respective single-elimination regional tournaments, 2 teams win both of games earning nationals berth. national tournament pool play format winners of each pool advancing semifinals. semifinal match-ups winner of pool vs. pool c , pool b vs. pool d.

acha men s division 3 consists of approximately 140 teams in ten conferences , independents. these teams divided 4 regions (atlantic, north, pacific , south). total of 16 teams qualify national tournament in same manner division 2. national tournament has been conducted in same manner division 2 since 2010. before single elimination , every team played 4 games. 1 exception semifinals match-ups. winner of pool plays winner of pool b , winner of pool c plays winner of pool d.

women s divisions

acha women s division 1 includes 23 teams 2016–17 season, independents liberty , mckendree playing in 1 of 3 wd1 conferences. 8 teams qualify national tournament each season: automatic bids awarded playoff champions of central collegiate women s hockey association , western women s collegiate hockey league, remainder of field determined taking highest-placing teams last of series of weekly rankings (the rankings calculated through computer component , consolidated opinion of wd1 competition committee, each weighted 50 percent). @ nationals, 8 teams paired off ranking (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc.) best-of-three first round, winners of series advancing semifinals.

acha women s division 2 includes 41 teams 2016–17 season, 27 standing member of 1 of 4 conferences. teams sorted either east region (22 teams) or west region (19 teams). @ end of year, top 6 teams each region in final edition of quarterly ranking (calculated wd1 rankings, exception being each region has own competition committee) invited acha national tournament. wd2 tournament differs wd1 in teams divided pools , play round robin determine semifinalists.
