history

a landmark educational institution of karachi— rlak govt. college of home economics has proud history. after independence, realising need , importance of investing in education of young women of country, scheme establishing college of home economics in karachi proposed government of pakistan part of first ever six-year development plan of education (1951–1957)

in 2010, education department of government of sindh decided handover administration of established college zindagi trust foundation run singer/humanitarian shehzad roy contrary ngo s objective of upgrading , renovating colleges under-developed , lack basic administration capabilities. move met severe opposition student body , staff members including teachers. followed series of protest teachers , students on roads , led intervention of governor sindh ishrat-ul-ibad condemned move education department. sindh professors , lecturers association(spla) condemned handover , announced initiate strikes throughout province if handover not reversed. made issue sensitive fact girls-only college come under administration of ngo had no prior experience of running such large institution fact college being efficiently run administration members alumni of college , had teaching experience on there well. @ time college had been renovated government s works department during departments including administration block , need external intervention not felt. moreover, land value of college made issue more controversial since college land occupies area of on 24 acres , lies in 1 of expensive localities of city.

establishment of ra ana liaquat ali khan, government college of home economics (rlak che), karachi started in 1952 support ford foundation (united states) , apwa. ford foundation provided funds building, books , training of staff while pakistan government provided land. apwa active member of governing council , administrative liaison between ford foundation , pakistan government. oklahoma state university-united states assisted in making of curriculum , syllabi, establishment of college, , training of teachers in karachi.

administrative controls

the college worked semi independent public institution under management of governing council. federal government paid salaries of staff , provided budget running of college.

the first batch of students admitted in 1955. masters education started in rlak che karachi in 1961. board of intermediate education, karachi responsible examining intermediate students , university of karachi graduate , post graduate students. staff sent off overseas training till 1971.

rlak che taken on government part of nationalization policy educational institutions in 1972. provincial government supported college constructing new blocks of buildings in 1991 , initiating renovation scheme in 2005.
