those present @ council of chalcedon accepted trinitarianism , concept of hypostatic union, , rejected arianism, modalism, , ebionism heresies (which had been rejected @ first council of nicaea in ad 325). present @ council rejected christological doctrines of nestorians, eutychians, , monophysites (these doctrines had been rejected @ first council of ephesus in 431).


the chalcedonian understanding of how divine , human relate in jesus christ humanity , divinity exemplified 2 natures , 1 hypostasis of logos subsists in these 2 natures. non-chalcedonians hold position of miaphysitism (sometimes called monophysitism opponents). miaphysitism holds in 1 person of jesus christ, divinity , humanity united in 1 nature, 2 being united without separation, without confusion , without alteration. led many members of 2 churches condemn each other: chalcedonians condemning non-chalcedonians eutychian monophysites, , non-chalcedonians condemning chalcedonians nestorians.


later interpreters of council held chalcedonian christology rejected monothelitism , monoenergism (rejected @ third council of constantinople in 680). did not accept chalcedonian christology call non-chalcedonian. historically, called miaphysites or cyrillians (after st cyril of alexandria, writing on unity of christ adopted them , taken standard) , called orthodox christians monophysites. held non-chalcedonian christologies called doctrine of chalcedon dyophysitism.
