first collaborative era
blackfield (2000–2005)

geffen, fan of porcupine tree , wilson, invited band play shows in israel in 2000. struck friendship wilson, leading 2 musicians recording together. geffen performed backing vocals on 2 tracks on porcupine tree s in absentia album, sound of muzak , prodigal . geffen, interested in growing fanbase outside of israel, approached wilson starting own project, become blackfield. planned ep 2001 release, evolved 2004 self-titled full-length recording. wilson provided lead vocals on 2 songs, , played guitar or piano on every song except scars , had instrumentation provided geffen s band mistakes.

outside of israel, band has received constant comparison porcupine tree, wilson s popular project. in response, wilson has explained:

...porcupine tree never focused on art of 3 minute pop song, believe. blackfield art of great tradition pop song of verse-chorus-verse-chorus. porcupine tree has never been that, although have fraternized little bit art of pop music. porcupine tree has been more horizontally complex long pieces , album overall piece rather lots of little pieces... aviv not big fan of heavy music , not big fan of long pieces meeting point had somewhere both focused on short melancholic songs.

in 2004 band debuted live on couple of promotional tv performances in israel. line-up featured drummer chris maitland (drummer of porcupine tree 1993 2002), replaced tomer zidkyahu, european tour followed in autumn of 2004.

their first self-titled album released in israel , europe in 2004, , united states in 2005.

blackfield ii (2006–2008)

while band s first album created on relatively long period of time, follow-up album, blackfield ii, created in 1 short burst of activity. wilson , geffen worked on respective projects throughout end of 2005, in 2006 wilson moved israel 6 months work on album. wilson performed lead or co-vocals on tracks except miss u , geffen performed vocals on. album released in february 2007 in europe , march 2007 in united states. in same year, keyboardist daniel salomon left band continue successful solo career. salomon replaced eran mitelman, former keyboardist popular israeli hard rock band hayehudim.

the band recorded live cd/dvd combo, titled blackfield – live in new york city while touring in support of blackfield ii, in march 2007.

in 2008 interview, wilson discussed blackfield s future @ time, stating think re going tentatively start working on new songs , s far ve got regarding planning. think there record. no-man , other projects, there s no reason stop doing them long music keeps flowing.

geffen-led era
welcome dna (2009–2011)

in january 2009, promote first english-language european release, geffen went on small tour of europe blackfield live band, including wilson being billed special guest. half of set consisted of songs yet released first english language solo album geffen while rest selection of blackfield songs. wilson appear on 3 tracks album.

in april 2010, geffen , wilson got studio begin writing follow-up blackfield ii. however, time, songs, exception of track waving , written geffen, wilson had been concentrating on second solo album, grace drowning, @ same time. wilson performed lead vocals on 5 of eleven tracks, provide backing or co-vocals on several other tracks. third album, welcome dna, released on 28 march 2011 , supported european , north american tour following kickoff concert in israel. however, several concert dates cancelled due death of wilson s father in may 2011.

blackfield iv (2012–2014)

after touring welcome dna completed, wilson confirmed blackfield, majority of other projects, himself had no particular plans future, project wasn t on either. however, in january 2012, geffen has announced intentions release fourth blackfield album may 2012. prompted wilson announce role continue lessen, wilson acting contributor , mixer. wilson said of band s future:

wilson later admitted own idea geffen take on project, because wilson wanted concentrate on solo career , porcupine tree in 2012 , 2013, while geffen wanted blackfield album right away in 2012, , wilson felt guilty holding him back.

on 29 , 30 january, both geffen , wilson in studio working on vocals , guitar upcoming, untitled, fourth album. wilson stated contribute lead vocals 1 song, contributing bunch of guitar parts , arranging backing vocals . despite lessened role, still said protective of blackfield legacy , , next album still sound quintessential blackfield album. 1 of guest vocalists wilson had alluded before, revealed vincent cavanagh of band anathema, recorded vocals track. on 14 june 2012, geffen announced in final mixing stages of album wilson.

in september 2012 interview discord magazine, wilson reiterated stance blackfield, stating:

i won’t producing [the fourth album], helping [geffen], bit of singing, guitar, mixing whatever takes not going tour, ll much, ll kill myself, run myself ground. won t tour blackfield anymore keep name going...i don t think writing kind of style blackfield make @ right now.

at end of november 2012, geffen stated aims april 2013 release time frame. wilson reiterated sang , played guitar on several tracks, less before , geffen able bunch of great singers contribute record, of whom quite known , , album first geffen consent mixed surround sound.

on 25 february 2013, wilson released third solo album, raven refused sing, of copies contained compilation sampler disc of music done artists under record label kscope; 1 track new blackfield track, pills , taken new album.

on 9 june 2013, announced fourth album officially titled blackfield iv, , release date 26 august 2013. blackfield toured in support of album in february 2014, wilson being present performances. on 29 january 2014 wilson announced intention quit band after european tour, due increasingly tight schedule solo career , upcoming projects.

second collaborative era
blackfield v (2015-present)

in january 2015 announced geffen , alan parsons recording , performing future blackfield album. despite wilson s comments alluding leaving band in 2014, seen in recording sessions geffen , parsons in june 2015 , june 2016. in august 2016, album details officially announced, revealing official album title - blackfield v, artwork, , see return collaborative approach between wilson , geffen taken first 2 blackfield records. album scheduled release on 18 november 2016, later delayed 10 february 2017. on 8 december 2016 family man , how ride? , sorrys , second, third , fifth songs album, released.
