former headquarters of j.c. deagan, inc. in chicago, henry schluter invented vibraphone. (2008) home century mallet instrument service.
this popularity led j.c. deagan, inc. in 1927 ask chief tuner, henry schluter, develop similar instrument. however, schluter didn t copy leedy design, introduced several significant improvements: making bars aluminium instead of steel more mellow basic tone; adjustments dimensions , tuning of bars eliminate dissonant harmonics in leedy design (further mellowing tone); , introduction of foot-controlled damper bar musicians can play more expression. schluter s design more popular leedy design, , has become template instruments called vibraphone.
however, when deagan began marketing schluter s instrument in 1928, called vibraharp. name derived similar aluminum bars mounted vertically , operated harp stop on theatre organ. since deagan trademarked name, others obliged use earlier vibraphone instruments incorporating newer design.
the name confusion continues, present, on time vibraphone became more popular vibraharp. 1974, directory of d.c. federation of musicians listed 39 vibraphone players , 3 vibraharp players.
the initial purpose of vibraphone add large arsenal of percussion sounds used vaudeville orchestras novelty effects. use overwhelmed in 1930s development jazz instrument. of 2015, retains use jazz instrument, , established major keyboard percussion instrument, used solos, in chamber ensembles, , in modern orchestral compositions.
