on 31 december 1980 hart dyke promoted captain, , appointed command of type 42 destroyer coventry, seeing active service during falklands war. on 25 may 1982 coventry stationed north-west of falkland sound broadsword, providing radar cover ground troops in san carlos water, when attacked 4 argentine a-4 skyhawks. hit 2 1,000 lb (450 kg) bombs, capsized within 20 minutes, loss of 19 men.
he subsequently served assistant chief of staff commander of british naval staff in washington, d.c., 1982 1984, , assistant naval attaché in washington 1985 1987. 1987 until 1989 director of naval recruiting, , 7 july 1988 appointed naval aide-de-camp queen. on 1 january 1990 hart dyke made commander of order of british empire (cbe), , retired royal navy week later on 7th.
after leaving navy hart dyke appointed clerk , chief executive of worshipful company of skinners, livery company of city of london. retired in 2003, , in 2007 published 4 weeks in may, account of loss of coventry during falklands war.
