reynolds performing in charlottesville in late 1980s when friend, nic cappon, encouraged him perform @ local bar, miller s, met bartender dave matthews. reynolds explains:

i played there [miller s in charlottesville] time. dave matthews bartender. knew rest of [future] band way before that. played in charlottesville since moved there in 1981. play leroi moore , carter beauford. dave moved town in 1987. when dave matthews band started (1991), had own band (tr3). told him (dave matthews), ve got band , kind of way is. should start band. see needed own thing.

in 1993, reynolds , dave matthews started playing few acoustic duo sets. these featured matthews music, stripped down acoustic guitar, paired reynolds s guitar, , reynolds occasional use of slide guitar. during these sets, reynolds play between 1 , 4 of own pieces spanned own catalog of work. after few years these shows gained popularity, , in 1996 matthews , reynolds embarked on first full tour duo. in 1999, coinciding release of 40-date tour, live @ luther college released.

after short break, reynolds toured again matthews duo in 2003. reynolds , matthews reprised duo shows opening act dave matthews & friends tour in 2003 , 2004. played several shows in 2006 , 2007. reynolds joined matthews on mini-tour of europe in february , march 2007. on 14 august 2007, matthews , reynolds released live cd/dvd set, live @ radio city, including songs stay or leave , gravedigger , cornbread , , dancing nancies, among others. includes 2 of reynolds own songs; sanity , betrayal . radio city show released in high definition on blu-ray disc.

in 2008, reynolds once again joined dave matthews band recording big whiskey , groogrux king producer rob cavallo. reynolds s first recording collaboration matthews since 2003 s devil , first dave matthews band since 1998 s before these crowded streets.

reynolds , matthews performed several times in april 2008: in support of presidential candidate barack obama, @ seeds of compassion show in seattle, washington, , @ jack johnson s kokua festival @ waikiki shell on island of oahu, in honolulu, hawaii.

reynolds toured lead guitarist dave matthews band in support of big whiskey , groogrux king in 2008. of summer tour of 2016, still full-time member of dave matthews band.

following release of dave matthews first solo album, devil, matthews brought many of albums collaborators , embarked on small winter 2003/2004 u.s. tour. group consisted of trey anastasio (of phish) on guitar, brady blade on drums, tony hall on bass, ray paczkowski on keys, , reynolds on guitar. each show opened small acoustic matthews , reynolds set, , followed full band set reynolds performing on electric guitar. of devil played live tour, along wide variety of covers, including, reynolds request, peter gabriel s hit solsbury hill .

dave matthews & friends performed occasional shows again in 2004, 2005, , 2006. in 2008, reynolds joined dave matthews band on summer north american tour, , scheduled rejoin them on spring 2009 north american tour.

both matthews , reynolds have open taping policy additionally extends tr3, available on website. pair contend no 2 concerts alike, due in great part reynolds inspired exploration of melody on stage.
