on desert planet in distant future, humanity inhabits 3 domed utopian cities: four-bee, four-boo, , four-baa. humans have no responsibilities; daily needs served quasi-robots run government through committee. young humans known jang rigidly expected whatever please, indulge in various forms of drugs, have sex (as long marry first, if afternoon), , live own pleasures. can visit, have dreams constructed them, buy or steal want @ will, , sabotage city (though robots instantly repair damage). robots handle everything, , nothing left humans do. nor can die in meaningful sense; when do, resurrected in body customised wishes.
technology

plot
the book opens narrator visiting close friend after fortieth suicide-by-birdplane. offended insensitivity, kills herself, then, in new body, embarks on series of mundane attempts amuse herself, including stealing white fluffy desert animal keeps pet, programming elaborate dreams herself, having unsatisfying sex peers, , employing wide variety of legal drugs. incapable of making emotional connections anyone, finds life increasingly unsatisfying, though demanding , difficult pet interest her.
soon after going through mundane rituals of life narrator feels should not jang teenager more. however, quasi-robots run city determine not ready become older person. tries looking useful job, no avail: robots , computers perform every useful task. attempts have child, unable find suitable partner, tries have child herself, , ends causing child die. unable fill emptiness feels, joins expedition explore deserts outside city. during expedition, narrator realises beauty of life outside of domes , gains strong emotional connection stolen pet. however, accidentally killed, devastating her. upon returning city, still unable make lasting emotional connections peers. considers death , wonders if belongs in city or somewhere else.
