as australian schools, churchie utilises house system. each student member of 1 of eleven houses, , competes in inter-house events. churchie s inter-house competition includes swimming, cross-country, track , field, trivia, lightning chess , singing. points awarded based on house s participation , position. in addition inter-house cup awarded @ end of year, shields awarded house comes first in each event. canon morris started churchie s house system in 1935.

casey house founded in 1971 , named in honour of richard gardiner casey (1890–1976), later baron casey of berwick, distinguished australian diplomat, politician , governor-general of australia. house motto, vis et unitas, translated progress through unity . house coat of arms incorporates themes casey s own coat of arms, addition of crossed viking swords. colours: gold , royal purple (baron casey s own colours).
grenfell
grenfell, founded in 1935, 1 of first four-day houses @ churchie. named after sir wilfred thomasson grenfell, born @ parkgate, england, in 1865. grenfell doctor love of sea , interest in boating led him becoming master mariner. lecturer of suggested join large fishing fleet doctor. within 5 years had encouraged fishermen stop drinking alcohol , queen victoria s interest in successful persuasion of crew led presenting fleet first hospital boat. in 1891, grenfell sailed cape st. john in north atlantic. mobbed people needed medical attention. following spring returned labrador 2 doctors , nurses, set 2 hospital bases eskimos populated labrador. third hospital set @ st. anthony in 1898. sir wilfred grenfell gave school permission use personal motto, loyal devoir, , coat of arms when house established. colours: red , gold.
hillary
hillary house named late headmaster charles fisher, looked men had achieved success in chosen field. chose sir edmund hillary, who, in 1953, 1 of first men ever climb mount everest. house colours , crest chosen first students of hillary designs submitted students. crest incorporated symbols of knighthood—a knight s helmet, castle, , fist pointing upward. house motto semper sursum ( ever upward ). colours: black , gold.
kingsley
kingsley 1 of original 4 houses. held both day , boarding students until 1950, when 2 boarding houses created. in 1971, kingsley house divided create biggs , hillary houses. canon morris chose charles kingsley, man considered christian viking s courage, house s patron. history revealed charles kingsley have been man practiced christian beliefs , followed social conscience less fortunate, whom chose live. kingsley house motto, age quod agis, translates loosely . colours: black , white.
magnus
magnus 1 of original 4 day houses. house named after st magnus, churchie s patron saint. house s coat of arms simple shield st. magnus holding sword , palm of martyrdom. image of st magnus stained-glass window in st magnus cathedral in orkney , dates thirteenth century. house motto sibi fidelis ( faithful oneself ). colours: maroon , royal blue.

mansfield named after sir alan mansfield, distinguished barrister , former judge, chief justice , governor of queensland. sir alan attended school when known st. magnus hall. house crest borrows heavily mansfield family coat of arms. house motto steadfast. colours: white , blue.

mawson house named after sir douglas mawson, distinguished geologist , antarctic explorer, became famous discovery of south magnetic pole in 1908 , ill-fated second journey antarctica in 1911. continued visit , explore antarctica until 1931. house motto alis austri ( on wings of south wind ). mawson coat of arms includes vessel mawson used on voyages south , southern cross. colours: red , green.

nansen 1 of original 4 houses, named after fridtjof nansen, scientist, explorer , humanitarian. nansen house crest established @ churchie in 1938; inscribed on crest motto fram, means forward . colours: green , white.

gerald house opened in 1934, need new boarding accommodation grew. prior 1959, boarders took part in competitive sport members of day house. changed in 1950, when boarding houses became sporting competitors in own right. house named after gerald sharp, archbishop of brisbane (1921–1933). house crest shows bishop s mitre symbolises connection archbishop sharp; large star signifies god; 2 smaller stars king , country, , 5 small stars signify truth, honesty, duty, comradeship, , charity. house s motto fideliter et constanter, meaning faithfully , . colours: green , yellow.

in 2006, churchie lessened number of school houses in inter-house competition. 5 houses—three day , 2 boarding—were abolished, reducing total number of houses sixteen eleven. 3 day houses removed alban (dark blue , sky blue), schonell (red , blue) , halse (gold , light green). donaldson (blue , gold) , strong (gold , black) 2 former boarding houses.
