the hospital s facilities enlarged, in part expansion of mills building, , in part construction of new buildings on campus. in 1892, hospital opened nursing school (which closed in 1950), , in 1896 changed name south carolina state hospital insane. campus @ capacity in 1910 (and many such facilities nationwide, underfunded, understaffed, , patients not cared-for), second campus opened african-americans north of columbia. known first palmetto state hospital later named crafts-farrow hospital, campus served many years geriatric care facility, , houses multiple divisions of department of mental health, including public safety, training , research, information technology, food services, print shop, etc.
ongoing issues staffing, funding, , patient conditions persisted in 20th century, , state began transitioning mental health care community settings in 1920. legal action surrounding patient care , funding in hospital facilities in 1980s resulted in more focused effort reduce hospital population. in 1996, 2 campuses consolidated, 410 beds. buildings no longer used patient care, time housed offices of state department of mental health. historic mills building housed department of health & environmental control.
while department of health , environmental control still occupies mills-jarrett complex, remainder of campus has been sold or in process of sale private developer. department of mental health ended use of site in december of 2015, when william s. hall children s institute relocated campus.
