bellevue settled in 1869 william meydenbauer , aaron mercer, claimed homestead tracts several miles apart. prior opening of lake washington floating bridge in 1940, bellevue rural area little development. although small, developers pushing change that; in 1920s, james s. ditty predicted become city population of 200,000. envisioned plans included bridging of lake washington , area filled golf courses , airports. map these visions published in 1928.


once murrow memorial bridge opened, access seattle improved, , area gradually grew bedroom community. after japanese internment began in 1942 large quantity of farm land available development. made way initial development of bellevue downtown area.

bellevue incorporated third class city on march 21, 1953. following 1963 opening of second bridge across lake, evergreen point floating bridge, city began grow more rapidly. has since become 1 of largest cities in state, several high-rise structures in core , burgeoning business community. city experienced building boom during mid 2000s, building of developments such lincoln square , bravern.


reflective of bellevue s growth on years bellevue square, 1 of largest shopping centers in region. opened in 1946, mall underwent significant expansion in 1980s. more recently, expansion along bellevue way called lodge , new 1 lincoln tower promise strengthen downtown bellevue s role largest seattle eastside shopping , dining destination.


the city s long-term plans include bel-red corridor project, large-scale planning effort encourage redevelopment of large northern section of city bordering adjacent town of redmond major employment area in city. patterned after many civic leaders consider successful redevelopment of downtown core, plans include superblock mixed use projects similar lincoln square. premised on 2008 approval of extension of link light rail eastside, city hopes mitigate transportation problems impeding earlier efforts in redeveloping downtown core; viewed economic development opportunity many in business , building development community, process has focused on infrastructure , encouragement of private construction in large-scale urban renewal effort.
