stage 1 (on view in scenes martin confronts dr. shepard , attempts telephone beth logan): martin s face discolored, , s looking haggard. worse, bizarre cavity in left arm has appeared, , sticky, web-like threads being excreted it. eric stoltz s face subtly discolored makeup, , gelatin makeup appliance affixed left arm. webbing coming out of martin s arm made halloween-style decorative spider-webbing.
stage 1-a (on view when martin views various bartok surveillance tapes, , when subsequently escapes bartok complex): martin looking more haggard, , skin beneath eyes puffy. accentuated version of stage 1 makeup, gelatin eyebags added under stoltz s eyes.
stage 2 (on view when martin talks beth inside houseboat, in deleted stopping food scene can seen on 2005 fly ii: collector s edition dvd): martin s bone structure has started shift, , face rapidly becoming deformed. gelatin appliances added stoltz s face give impression martin s brow , cheekbones becoming distorted.
stage 3 (on view when martin , beth visit stathis borans, when arrive @ motel): martin s entire head deformed, hairline receding, , voice deepening. also, stringy white webbing being excreted face now. gelatin makeup appliances added stoltz s entire head, , voice artificially lowered in post-production.
stage 4 (on view inside motel, , when bartok arrives retrieve martin): martin (his voice deeper) has begun instinctively pull webbing out of own body , wrap around himself. hardens, webbing begins form cocoon. @ point, martin s legs have been enveloped said cocoon. martin no longer wearing clothes, hideous assortment of lumps , bumps can seen on discolored body, face , head more distorted, , teeth , ears receding. of fingers webbed flaps of skin, , claws growing on knuckles. martin removes human right eye in stage reveal orange insect eye behind it. complex makeup, stage took 12 hours apply eric stoltz, , required remain immobile on motel couch (with legs inside partial cocoon) time, during additional hours of filming followed. body makeup , gelatin bumps added stoltz s arms , torso, in addition makeup appliances covering face , head.
soon, martin enveloped cocoon (which begins transparent, next stage becoming opaque , iridescent). scene featuring bartok talking cocooned martin involved martin rod puppet—transformed waist-down—being operated inside transparent composite cocoon filled water.
after brief gestation period, final martinfly creature revealed when bursts out of cocoon , goes on rampage around bartok complex. iridescent creature has 4 arms (the top pair featuring 2 large, clawed digits, , other pair having 4 webbed digits), 2 digitigrade legs, , green body covered insect hairs. martinfly tall , slender, segmented torso. head has piercing, orange insect eyes (with pupils), distorted nostrils, , 2 flexible mandibles sharp teeth covering mouth full of more teeth. interior of creature s mouth contains pseudo-proboscis, can spray corrosive enzymes @ high velocity. whereas brundlefly creature in first film deformed , sickly-looking, martinfly possesses better symmetry , strong, fast, , deadly. final martinfly creature created series of cable-controlled , rod-operated puppets.
