Neighborhood Ortega (Jacksonville)

ortega has few different sections different characteristics. there riverfront, multimillion dollar mansions. ortega point has old wood frame , tudor homes surrounding bettes park. historic district has modest wood frame homes dating 1900s. ortega terrace towards southern interior of peninsula has large, stone , brick houses mix of styles. there extensive park system , many of local residents set trusts maintain , landscape parks.

two schools serve ortega: ortega elementary school , st. mark s episcopal day school; many children attend stockton elementary school in nearby ortega forest. many of neighborhood children walk or ride bikes school , neighborhood characterized strong family-oriented environment. many of neighborhood teenagers attend local or northern private schools or international baccalaureate @ 1 of 2 magnet high schools nearby.

the street system grid pattern themed street names. 1 end of historic district has street names characterized large native american tribes. 1 section has names of ivy league schools. section has names of styles of columns (i.e. doric, ionic, corinthian).

the largest churches in area st. mark’s episcopal church , united methodist church.

residents members of either florida yacht club or timuquana country club. due easy access water many residents enjoy boating or sailing. prominent new york businessman william astor helped start florida yacht club , active member there (there still room in present 1928 clubhouse named him). timuquana’s greens designed country’s prominent golf architect, donald ross , later upgraded , maintained robert trent jones.

huckins yachts constructed across ortega river neighborhood. started on 80 years ago, first huckins sold david m. goodrich of b.f. goodrich rubber company. later purchased 2 more yachts. many residents of neighborhood own huckins yacht, ranging in size 35 feet 100 feet. huckins popular in yachting circles in fort lauderdale, florida , newport, rhode island. huckins built many pt boats u.s. navy in world war ii.
