history
1923-1994

it unknown when first aerodrome in nizhny novgorod built, location 0.5 km north moscow movie theater stands today. aerodrome named nizhny novgorod airport. on july 23, 1923, first domestic , regular flight in russia khodynka airport, moscow, nizhny novgorod airport, nizhny novgorod. flight carried on 4-seated junkers f. 13.

in 1937, due gorky s (nizhny novgorod s official name between 1932-1990) spontaneous population increase, ussr council of ministers ordered new aerodrome built outside city s municipal district. in 1938, new strigino airport completed construction. today, nizhny novgorod international airport still located in same general location strigino airport. new runways handle douglas dc-3, junker f. 13, junker a. 35, , other light-weight aircraft.

in world war 2, airport served air base 201st air division. in 1950, 5 years after war, division regrouped 148th air division , relocated air bases in far east.

in 1963, new domestic terminal began construction. terminal completed construction in 1965, , had first passengers same year. terminal still used today strigino s main facility departures , arrivals. in 1963 new enterprise nizhny novgorod united air group formed. group operated airport 1963-1994. 1966-1973 new administrative zone, repair hangar, cargo terminal, , hostel completed construction. additionally, strigino s apron expanded , runway lengthened , reinforced.

between 1976-1983 second concrete runway finished optimization , 6-storey aeroflot hotel built. in 1989, strigino hit passenger traffic record of approximately 1,030,000. renovations of terminal (main terminal) made in 1991 after dissolution of ussr, , in 1993 in preparation gaining international status.

1994-2011

in 1994, after fall of soviet union , rapid increase in international flights, , after airport passed icao category standards, strigino given international status. in 1994 nizhny novgorod united air group split 3 new companies: state-owned nizhny novgorod international airport , nizhny novgorod airlines airline company, , aeronavigation nn .

in 2003, after steady decrease in passenger traffic , lack of sufficient funds, nizhny novgorod international airport went bankrupt , forced host multiple auctions. beginning 2004, traffic rate began rise again, @ relatively low pace. due locked cycle involving nn s low poetntial. nizhny novgorod needed more passengers in order start receiving investments. in order have more passengers, new modern terminal needed built, set more pleasant environment. however, there weren t enough funds build new terminal, , cycle refreshes.

2011-present

in 2011 hc airports of regions won bid on investment project nizhny novgorod international airport. in 2012, renovations made in order more efficiently exploit existing facility whilst new 1 being built.

in june 2014, construction of new terminal started. supposed opened december 2015 , able handle around 300 passengers per hour. second terminal built after world cup in 2018, hosted nizhny novgorod among others, , aforementioned railway station planned constructed during time well. new terminal opened on december 29, 2015 first flight, moscow, directed there. airport authority plans redirect domestic flights new terminal february 2016 , international flights april 2016.
