selected pilot nasa in july 2000, hurley reported training in august 2000. following completion of 2 years of training , evaluation, assigned technical duties in astronaut office have included kennedy operations support “cape crusader” lead asp (astronaut support personnel) shuttle missions sts-107 , sts-121. has worked shuttle landing , rollout, served on columbia reconstruction team @ kennedy space center , in exploration branch in support of selection of orion crew exploration vehicle.
he served nasa director of operations @ gagarin cosmonaut training center in star city, russia. in july 2009, pilot on sts-127, iss assembly mission 2j/a, delivered japanese-built exposed facility (jem-ef) , experiment logistics module exposed section (elm-es) international space station. mission duration 15 days, 16 hours, 45 minutes.
on july 2011, hurley returned space on sts-135 on space shuttle atlantis. mission delivered multi-purpose logistics module (mplm) raffaello , lightweight multi-purpose carrier (lmc) international space station tested system investigated potential of robotically refueling existing spacecraft. sts-135 mission duration 12 days, 18 hours, 27 minutes , 56 seconds. overall, hurley has accumulated on 683 hours in space.
after returning earth, has served assistant director, new programs, flight crew operations directorate (fcod) @ johnson space center, , on august 2014 became assistant director commercial crew program following merger of flight operations , mission operations.
in july 2015, nasa announced hurley 1 of first astronauts u.s. commercial spaceflights. subsequently, has started working boeing , spacex train in commercial crew vehicles, along other chosen astronauts - sunita williams, robert behnken , eric boe.
