original format used: 8 micron (micrometre) square data bits, 16 bit per audio channel, 8 audio channels, 2 clock tracks, 2 guide tracks alignment film.
final format used: 24 micrometre square data bits.

the format carries 8 channels of discrete digital sound encoded using sony s atrac codec compression ratio of 5:1 , sampling rate of 44.1 khz. channels are:

2 surround channels

left surround
right surround


subwoofer channel

additionally there 4 backup channels encoded – in case of damage 1 side of film or other. these are:

center
subwoofer
left + left center
right + right center

this gives total of 12 channels, total bitrate of 2.2 megabits per second. more maximum 1.536 megabits per second dts format bitrate, , far greater cinema dolby digital bitrate of 0.64 megabits per second.

for additional data reliability 2 sides of film separated 17 frames, single splice or series of missing frames not result in total loss of data.
