old queen s oldest building , centerpiece of 6 extant building constitute queen s campus. historic core of university, contains university s oldest buildings. while old queen s building obtained discrete separate listing on national register of historic places landmark status in 1976, entire six-acre campus these 6 remaining buildings included 1 historic site on new jersey register of historic places on january 29, 1973, , on national register of historic places on july 2, 1973. these 6 buildings are:



old queen s (built 1809–1825)
van nest hall (1845)
daniel s. schanck observatory (1865)
geology hall (1872)
kirkpatrick chapel (1873)
winants hall (1890)

a seventh building, former president s house (built in 1841), demolished in 1948 after damage sustained during hurricane. used residence of college s president in nineteenth century, later used fine arts building before razed.


the old queens campus accessed through 4 gateways, henry rutgers baldwin gateway (erected 1901) on college avenue, named henry rutgers baldwin (class of 1849), class of 1883 memorial gateway (erected in 1904) @ corner of george , somerset streets, class of 1882 gateway (erected 1907) @ corner of somerset street , college avenue, , class of 1902 memorial gateway (erected in 1904) on hamilton street leading voorhees mall , academic buildings on rutgers university s college avenue campus. through last gate graduating seniors walk during commencement exercises in may.


located in front of old queens, class of 1877 cannon commemorates both rutgers-princeton cannon war , several alumni have served in united states military. tradition during commencement, graduating break clay pipes on cannon symbol of breaking ties pipe dreams of youth , embarking adulthood.
