an hour’s fast driving [from olympia, washington] through thinned-out timber…brought me within sound of surf. broad white road, striped yellow down center, swept around flank of hill, distant cluster of buildings loomed in front of shine of ocean, , road forked. left fork posted: “westport – 9 miles”, , didn’t go towards buildings. crossed rusty cantilever bridge , plunged region of wind-distorted apple orchards.
twenty minutes more , chugged westport, sandy spit of land scattered frame houses dotted on rising ground behind it. end of spit long narrow pier , end of pier cluster of sailing boats half-lowered sails flapping against single masts. , beyond them buoyed channel , long irregular line water creamed on hidden sandbar.
beyond sandbar pacific rolled on japan. last outpost of coast, farthest west man go , still on mainland of united states...
