despite serious injuries arm, leg, , face quinn returned australia , resumed footballing career despite prognosis suggesting never play again.


1944: last year port/torrens

debuting playing 12 games , kicking 28 goals combined port adelaide/west torrens side in reduced sanfl competition due war. return match first round of 1944 season, port adelaide/west torrens played 1943 premiers north/norwood @ adelaide oval. quinn given standing ovation crowd. quinn s injuries , years away competition meant slower player in pre-war career , forced change playing style, running ball less , increased use of handball. playing in second semifinal against sturt/south adelaide @ adelaide oval, quinn leading player when, in third quarter, took mark , fell heavily, breaking arm, wrenching left thumb , badly bruising hip still played out match. there particular concern quinn s broken arm, break below severe wound received in new guinea.


1945: quinn & bunton

the 1945 sanfl season returned 8 club competition clubs competing in own right. quinn started season arm sound sustained in world war ii showed lost nothing of skill , determination, winning second magarey medal 45 votes, 17 ahead of second place doug olds of norwood football club. polled votes in twelve of sixteen games played, 6 best on grounds, 5 sets of 2 votes , 1 one-vote performance. additionally, quinn won third club best , fairest , second club leading goalkicking award, 51 goals equalling 1937 return goals in season. 1945 saw haydn bunton, sr., 1 of greatest australian rules players of time, join port adelaide final season of football. quinn , bunton regularly combined during season show off superior skills admiring crowds. on 7 july, quinn captained south australia against victoria @ adelaide oval, leading south australia 17.23 (125) 10.13 (73) win. quinn voted best on ground volatile ground play , chaired off ground team mates @ end of match. port adelaide finished minor round on top of table, 3 wins clear of clear of second place west torrens, , firm favorites grand final, against west torrens. after leading early, port overtaken faster finishing west torrens defeated port adelaide 15.25 (115) 15.12 (102). quinn named 1 of best losing team.


1946: draw in victoria

in 1946 quinn captained south australia come behind draw victoria. after match bob quinn approached doctor operated on him in new guinea. doctor told bob saw name in melbourne newspaper captain of south australia , in disbelief came watch came. asked bob show him leg , said have quipped bloody job made of didn’t i?


1947: sporting life s all-australian captain , retirement

during 1947, quinn s final season player, won fourth port best , fairest. sporting life magazine named bob quinn captain in first concept of all-australian team 3 south australian s selected in side. on retirement, quinn had played 186 games port adelaide, kicking 386 goals, plus further 15 games , 26 goals south australia (which captained 1945–47).
