the building completed in 1801 designs of john sanders, designed royal military academy sandhurst. called royal military asylum , school children of soldiers widows. in 1892 renamed duke of york s royal military school. in 1909, school moved new premises in dover, , asylum building taken on territorial army , renamed duke of york s barracks in 1911. during first world war headquarters of 18th (county of london) battalion, london regiment (london irish rifles).
during second world war, courts martial of german spies, josef jakobs , theodore schurch, (both tried under treachery act 1940) both conducted in building.
in 1980 building extensively restored , renovated, £1.5 million programme being carried out donald insall associates. @ time building served headquarters territorial army in greater london, , home of territorial units 144 parachute field ambulance ramc(v), 257 (southern) general hospital ramc, 21 special air service regiment (artists), , companies of ta parachute regiment , london irish rifles. in addition, served headquarters of royal corps of signals , first aid nursing yeomanry, , home of coldstream guards band, , light aid detachment of royal electrical , mechanical engineers. housed offices of raf escaping society, army historical association, army benevolent fund, , soldiers, sailors , airmen s families association.
the site sold cadogan estates ministry of defence, initial proceeds of £66 million received in 2000 , further £28 million when site vacated in 2003. cadogan has redeveloped site paul davis , partners duke of york square. development includes public square, upmarket housing , retail outlets, , part of has been let new premises saatchi gallery, relocated there in 2008. garden house school, independent school pupils between ages of 3 eleven, occupies cavalry house, part of duke of york s headquarters on turks row, became grade ii listed building in july 1998.
