for centuries dutch ate oliekoek ( oil cookie ), old name oliebol ( oil ball ). oliebollen see in painting around 1652 similar today s oliebol. @ time, baked in lard or rapeseed oil. during nineteenth century word oliebol started used more. 1868 edition of van dale dictionary included word oliebol , whereas rival woordenboek der nederlandsche taal didn t include until 1896, stating oliekoek more commonly used term, major shift in usage occurred: twentieth century word oliebol became popular word, while oliekoek no longer in use.
