cassidy selected astronaut candidate nasa in may 2004. in february 2006 completed astronaut candidate training, included scientific , technical briefings, intensive instruction in space shuttle , international space station systems, physiological training, t-38 talon flight training, , water , wilderness survival training. completion of initial training qualified him various technical assignments within astronaut office , future flight assignment mission specialist.

cassidy assigned expedition 35 crew flight engineer , flew iss aboard soyuz tma-08m (us designation: 34s), launched on march 28, 2013. on may 11, 2013, cassidy , thomas marshburn performed unplanned spacewalk replace pump controller box suspected source of ammonia coolant leak.

cassidy participated in 2 spacewalks iss in june/july 2013. on july 16, 2013, joined luca parmitano on spacewalk. eva cut short when parmitano reported water floating behind head inside helmet. during eva, cassidy took space selfie. photo became 1 of best selfies of 2013 listed many news sites.
