the original home of pustets republic of venice, name bustetto common. in seventeenth century, founder of ratisbon line emigrated south germany, 1 of descendants, anton pustet, lived poor bookbinder in lower bavarian borough of hals (near passau) @ close of eighteenth century. him , wife anna (née scheuerocker) born on 25 march 1798, son, friedrich pustet.

having learned bookbinding under father, friedrich started small book-store in passau in 1819, , in 1822 founded separate printing establishment. business developed, , in 1826 able transfer publishing business ratisbon. establishing business relations prominent catholic authors, extended range of publications branches of literature, while paying special attention theology.

to extend business undertakings, in 1833 pustet set 1 of first printing-machines, , in 1836 erected near ratisbon paper factory, procured first paper machine in bavaria. in 1845 began printing liturgical works; associated department church music, co-operation of dr. proske, purpose of carrying out latter s ideas reform of ecclesiastical music. men dr. witt, dr. haberl, haller, later supported department.

in 1860 handed on business sons friedrich (b. 1831), karl (b. 1839), , klemens (b. 1833), , 2 years later acquired in munich royal bavarian central schoolbook-publishing company, conducted until 1874. died on 5 march 1882.

the sons continued expansion of business. friedrich chose department liturgical publications, karl german works, , klemens paper factory. success of friedrich earned him in 1870 title typographus s. r. congregationis ; vatican commissioned pustet print editio typica of liturgical works. branch firms established in new york (1865), cincinnati, ohio (1867), , rome (1898).

friedrich died on 4 august 1902. klemens had died before him (1898), , karl s death followed on 17 january 1910. karl, privy counsellor of commerce, expanded german publications: amongst regensburger marienkalender , illustrated family magazine, deutscher hausschatz .
