format
all games played according international rugby board laws of game – 7s variations.
pool phase
originally, twelve premiership clubs split 3 pools, each playing on 3 consecutive friday nights, on 1 of teams grounds. following expansion, 4 welsh regions compete in own pool.
teams play on round-robin format , awarded points based on results of matches. teams awarded:
4 points win
2 points draw
1 bonus point loss 7 points or less
1 bonus point scoring 4 or more tries in match
following completion of matches in pool, both winner , runner-up progress final.
final
2010 – 2013
for final, final 6 teams split 2 pools. teams again play each other on round-robin basis, receiving points in same manner in pool stage. after pool stage of final, respective winners of pools play each other in grand final, winner of game being declared winner of competition.
2014 – 2016
following expansion include welsh regions, format of finals changed.
eight teams contested quarter-finals, , format resembled traditional sevens final day, losers of quarter-finals contesting plate competition, , winners cup competition. winner of cup competition series winner.
2017 – present
for 2017 new format introduced 4 welsh regions no longer taking part , matches taking place in 1 venue on 2 days. 12 aviva premiership teams split 4 pools of 3 group matches taking place on first day , competition splitting bowl, plate , cup tournaments on second day.
