Quedlinburg treasures Whitewright, Texas



whitewright home of lieutenant joe tom meador, after world war ii looted several major pieces of art cave near quedlinburg, saxony-anhalt, germany. on april 19, 1945, american troops occupied quedlinburg. various treasures of art secured in cave near castle altenburg. meador responsible security of cave. meador, soldier knowledge of art, recognized importance of treasures (among them being gospel of samuel , crystals of constantinople). sent treasures whitewright via army mail, , art placed in safe @ first national bank of whitewright.


meador died in 1980, , heirs tried sell ten pieces of beutekunst (looted art) on international art market. after long search , judicial processes, art returned germany in 1992 , investigated because of damages pieces. @ first stolen artifacts exhibited in munich , berlin returned quedlinburg in 1993. however, 2 of pieces stolen meador still in united states @ unknown location.


a 2007 documentary of zdf showed path of robbing treasures.
