saint michael s catholic high school founded dominican sisters in 1955, opening gates first time in september of same year. choice of location direct result of influx of families moving out of central , north west london south hertfordshire, many of whom of irish and/or italian descent. before saint michael s opened, there no roman catholic secondary school in county. caused considerable challenges existing holy rood primary school, provided education age of 14. opening of st michael s planned in conjunction new feeder primaries.

the school became comprehensive school in 1966, catering full range of student abilities. brought first significant enlargement of facilities. science laboratories , new classrooms supplemented original main corridor part of restructuring. in 1990s school spent period of time under grant-maintained schools status. led construction of current administration block. since 2000 there has been considerable upgrading of existing buildings in addition construction of new wings. first of these saint martin de porres wing houses english department , drama studio. next came floodlit astroturf, providing all-weather outdoor sports facilities. came saint mary s wing, housing geography department , media centre.

in september 2005, saint michael s catholic high school became humanities specialist college. new sixth form block, aquinas centre, opened in september 2008, followed new saint bernadette sports hall in march 2010. additional funding came accolade used construct saint mary s wing. school academy, part of diocese of westminster academy trust.
