the next generation sleek hard-lined , redesigned w140-chassis (internally known c140) coupé of 1992–1999. designed bruno sacco, c140 s final design approved between late 1987 , 1988. though coupé’s physical appearance changed little on these years, class underwent name change several times. v8 , v12 coupés called 500 sec , 600 sec, respectively, in 1992 , 1993. 600 sec first v12 coupé ever offered mercedes-benz. 1994, model names changed s500 coupé , s600 coupé. name cl-class adopted in june 1996(1997 my1998 north american models), , w140 coupés called cl500 , cl600. production ended in august 1998.
the m119 5.0 l v8 engine regarded 1 of best engines ever produced german manufacturer (according various journalists automobile magazines such car , auto motor und sport). being lighter @ front, cl500 tended have better handling characteristics heavier v12 flagship. cl600 powered m120 48-valve twelve cylinder engine, developed 394 ps (290 kw; 389 hp) , 570 n·m (420 lb·ft) of torque.
