History League City, Texas

league city settled @ former site of karankawa indian village. 3 families, butlers, cowarts, , perkinses, considered founding families of city. cowart family settled on creek called cowart s creek after them (now called coward s creek ). perkins family built on creek notably lined magnolia trees, , named magnolia bayou. butler family settled inland.

the first resident of town proper, george w. butler, arrived louisiana in 1873 , settled @ junction of clear creek , chigger bayou. area known butler s ranch or clear creek until j. c. league acquired land man named muldoon on entering priesthood. league laid out town site along galveston, houston, , henderson railroad, established in area. began small feud on name, butler postmaster. name changed several times, alternating between clear creek , new league city. in end, league city chosen.

in 1907, league had 2 railroad flatcars of live oak trees left railroad tracks. these residents plant on property. butler , son milby supervised planting of these trees, known butler oaks. many of them line main street day.

in 2000s, rising real estate costs in galveston forced many families move other areas, including league city. meant influx of children out of galveston isd , other school districts clear creek isd , dickinson isd.
