until 2006, no actual trophy awarded winner of triple crown, hence referred invisible cup . dave merrington, retired miner south hetton, county durham, fashioned aspiring trophy in 1975 lump of coal hewn haig colliery in cumbria. has crown sitting on four-sided base on represented rose, shamrock, thistle , prince of wales feathers. kept in museum of rugby @ twickenham.


for 2006 6 nations, barry hooper, head of external communications @ royal bank of scotland (the primary sponsor of competition) commissioned edinburgh , london based hamilton & inches design , create dedicated triple crown trophy. has been awarded triple crown winning sides since 2006. has been won 3 times ireland, twice wales , twice england.
