prologue

music confesses disappointment recent entertainment has been secular. allied poetry, intends return true vocation: praise of god.


act one

the satyr trügewald wants seduce beautiful nymph seelewig. fearing own ugliness lead failure, enlists of vain young shepherd künsteling, ehrelob, reichimuth , sinnigunda. sinnigunda tries lead seelewig path of virtue gwissulda , herzigild warn latter beware of deceit. thwarted trügewald furious.


act two

künsteling, ehrelob, reichimuth , sinnigunda ply seelewig gifts (a telescope, fishing rod, bow , arrow , crown of flowers). once again gwissulda , herzigild save seelewig seductions. seelewig takes fright during storm , sings song asking advice forest echo, warns flee snares of world.


act three

the next morning trügewald , friends try new way trick seelewig. seelewig again asks advice echo time trügewald replies, disguising voice. echo tells seelewig give herself on pleasures of world. seelewig plays game of blind man s buff shepherds, trügewald leaps out , catches her. gwissulda , herzigild pull blindfold off seelewig s eyes reveal ugly truth. trügewald , companions chased forest. seelewig converted , chorus of angels give salvation.
