the fleet 1987 opening consisted of 11 light-rail vehicles (lrvs) built in 1986 linke-hofmann-busch (lhb, alstom) in germany , numbered 01 11. these referred p86 stock, p referring poplar depot, maintained. these cars had folding doors, proved problematic; later cars had sliding doors. vehicle 11 made history several times. part of light rail demonstration @ debdale park, manchester had pantograph fitted balfour beatty. demonstration took place on 9 february 1987 evaluation trials potential tram system in manchester. p11 last unit delivered dlr @ poplar on 30 march 1987, without pantograph. vehicle used queen , duke of edinburgh during royal opening of railway on 30 july 1987: train ran island gardens (when above ground) poplar , tower gateway. p11 formed first revenue-earning dlr vehicle , first vehicle moved essen in 1991.
