džeko s first appearance home country came bosnia , herzegovina national under-19 football team. part of under-21 team played in play-offs uefa european under-21 championship hosted netherlands in 2007. bosnia s first challenges in competition armenia under-21 , norway under-21. beat armenia 3–2 , tied norway 1–1, qualifying playoff against czech republic under-21. in first leg, bosnia lost 2–1; in second, game ended in 1–1 draw. džeko scored 1 goal in tournament.


he made senior debut against turkey on 2 june 2007. memorable debut player, scoring volleyed goal during first half stoppage time. goal levelled score @ 2–2 , bosnia went on win 3–2.

on 8 september 2012, in 8–1 win on liechtenstein, džeko scored first hat-trick national team , @ same time became leading goal scorer in history of bosnia , herzegovina national team 24 goals. record held elvir bolić scored 22 goals.


džeko ended 2014 fifa world cup qualification campaign second-top scorer in 2014 fifa world cup qualification ten goals bosnia , herzegovina qualified first major tournament in history.


in june 2014, džeko named in bosnian squad 2014 fifa world cup. on 25 june team eliminated, in final group match against iran, džeko scored opening goal bosnia , herzegovina first ever fifa world cup win. in august, following retirement of emir spahić international team, manager safet sušić named džeko new captain.


on 28 march 2015, džeko netted second international hat-trick, scoring of goals in 3–0 away win on andorra in uefa euro 2016 qualifying, first win in 5 games of qualification campaign.


on 13 november 2016, džeko had altercation in 2018 fifa world cup qualifier against greece greek player kyriakos papadopoulos, in pulled down sokratis papastathopoulos shorts while trying obtain ball. subsequent fight between 2 teams saw both džeko , papadopoulos sent off.


on 28 march 2017, džeko became first bosnian player score 50 international goals.
