rufford new hall built in 1760. country house built sir robert hesketh , enlarged grandson around 1798-9 when heskeths left rufford old hall. heskeths lived @ rufford new hall until 1919.
the hall built in brick formerly stuccoed. has low-pitched hipped slate roof concealed low parapet. 2 storey symmetrical frontage has five-bay facade ionic portico of unfluted columns on wide doorway fanlight. hall has 4 15-paned sashed windows on ground floor, 5 12-paned windows on first. spout heads bear initials of sir thomas dalrymple hesketh , date 1811 , 1 dated 1822. entrance hall has cantilevered or flying stone staircase , landing on 3 sides wrought iron balusters , lighted domed oval skylight. main hall has columns , pilasters made scagliola marble.
hospital
rufford new hall bought lancashire county council in 1920 , converted use hospital. rufford pulmonary hospital opened on 6 august 1926. had 50 beds treat patients tuberculosis. subsequently used nhs pre-convalescent hospital until closure in 1987. convalescent hospital administered ormskirk district general hospital.
