several requirements of new standard fixed right beginning:
completely backward compatible atsc (a/53),
broadcasters can use available license without additional restrictions and
available legacy atsc receivers can used receive atsc (a/53) standard without modification.

ten systems different companies proposed, , 2 remaining systems presented transmitter , receiver prototypes:
mph (an acronym mobile/pedestrian/handheld, suggesting miles per hour), developed lg electronics , harris broadcast. (zenith, subsidiary of lg, developed of original atsc system.)
a-vsb (advanced-vsb) developed samsung , rohde & schwarz.
to find best solution, advanced television systems committee assigned open mobile video coalition (omvc) test both systems. test report presented on may 15, 2008. result of detailed work omvc, final standard draft designed advanced television systems committee, specialist group s-4. atsc-m/h hybrid. following components of proposed systems used:syncword

signaling of service designed on base of established mobile standards
standard milestones
on december 1, 2008, advanced television systems committee elevated specification mobile digital television candidate standard status. in following 6 months, industry tested standard. before became official standard, additional improvements proposed.
atsc members approved ballot on 15 oct. 2009 official standard a/153.
atsc introduced in january 2010 @ consumer electronics show, name , logo mdtv atsc a/153
