ytterøy established municipality on 1 january 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). on 1 january 1867, mainland part of municipality separated ytterøy form new municipality of mosvik og verran. left municipality of ytterøy 1,499 residents on island of ytterøya.


on 1 january 1964, municipality of ytterøy merged neighboring municipality of levanger. prior merger, ytterøy had 772 residents.
