the name neuruppin means new ruppin , original settlement of ruppin (later alt ruppin, old ruppin ) located around castle on north-eastern shore of ruppiner see. in 13th century, when settlement became small growing population, neuruppin on western shore of lake established lords of lindow-ruppin. first mentioned in 1238 deed, became first establishment of dominican order between elbe , oder rivers, when local noble wichmann von arnstein founded neuruppin abbey in 1246. today monastery church still standing. since protestant reformation called st trinitatis. neuruppin received town privileges on 9 march 1256; town walls erected , completed until 15th century.
in 1524 ruppin land seized reverted fief hohenzollern elector joachim nestor of brandenburg. monastery secularised in course of reformation , premises ceded neuruppin citizens. town ravaged thirty years war, 1685 french huguenot refugees settled here. in 1688 neuruppin became brandenburg-prussian garrison town.
after disastrous fire in 1787 neo-classicism of rebuilt town s buildings characterise townscape present day. remained garrison town until late 20th century, since soviet (resp. russian) troops stationed here until 1993; during time there many soviet soldiers inhabitants in neuruppin.
